About the Catholic Charities Servant Leadership Initiative

AmeriCorps is the federal agency for national service and volunteerism. They provide opportunities for Americans of all backgrounds to serve their country, address the nation’s most pressing challenges, and improve lives and communities.  Established in 1964, Volunteers in Service to America, or VISTA as it's most commonly known, is one of the programs created by AmeriCorps to help communities combat poverty.  

As a grantee or AmeriCorps VISTA Intermediary organization, Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan (CCSEM) created the Catholic Charities Servant Leadership Initiative as part of the project award a project efforts that are awarded to qualified nonprofit and partnersThey provide grants and funding to hundreds of qualified nonprofit organizations, helping to improve communities. Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan is one of over 2,000 organizations that partner with AmeriCorps to enhance their efforts in serving communities in Southeast Michigan and across the country.

Why consider becoming an AmeriCorps VISTA member through Catholic Charities Servant Leadership Initiative?

As an AmeriCorps VISTA member, you’ll address community challenges where the need is greatest. Serve in an office setting and help fight poverty while building your professional skills and earning additional benefits including Living Allowance, Relocation Allowance, Healthcare Benefit, Professional Development Training, Child Care, and More... 

Do VISTA members get paid or is this a volunteer position?

You receive a modest bi-weekly living allowance to cover basic expenses. Upon completion of a service year, members are entitled to an End of Service Award. Members can choose between a Segal Education Award (valued at approximately $7,395) to pay for education expenses or a $1,800 cash stipend!

Non-Competitive Eligibility: A valuable benefit that you will receive after completing your service in AmeriCorps VISTA, providing you with one year of eligibility for federal government employment.

What are the eligibility requirements?

Be 18 years or older (no upper age limit)

Hold one of the following citizenship or legal residency statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident (i.e. Green Card status), and persons legally residing within a state. Examples of persons legally residing within a state may include those holding the following classifications: refugee, asylee, temporary protected status throughout VISTA service, and holding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status.

Is Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan part of AmeriCorps or the AmeriCorps VISTA program?
