Feb 11, 2025

With hearts full of gratitude and excitement, Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan (CCSEM) joyfully congratulates Archbishop-elect Most Rev. Edward J. Weisenburger on his appointment as the next Archbishop of Detroit! Announced by the Vatican this morning, Pope Francis has named Archbishop-elect Weisenburger to succeed Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron, who has faithfully shepherded the Archdiocese of Detroit since 2009. Archbishop-elect Weisenburger, 64, is the current bishop of the Diocese of Tucson in southern Arizona. He will bring his deep commitment to the Gospel and unwavering dedication to charitable service as the incoming CCSEM’s Board of Trustees president. "We are blessed to welcome his leadership, vision, and pastoral care as we continue our mission to bring the love and mercy of Jesus Christ to those in need throughout southeast Michigan," said Paul Propson, CEO of Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan.  His installation as the sixth Archbishop of Detroit will occur at 2:00 p.m. on March 18, 2025, at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit. As all of us here at CCSEM prepare for this transition, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Archbishop Vigneron for his faithful leadership and pastoral guidance, which have profoundly shaped the work of Catholic Charities and the broader Catholic community in our region.  The archbishop-elect’s episcopal motto is “Behold the Lamb of God,” referencing St. John the Baptist’s words proclaiming Jesus’ identity in John 1:29. Please join us in praying for Archbishop-elect Weisenburger as he embarks on this new chapter of his ministry. We look forward to serving under his leadership and continuing to answer Christ’s call to love and serve our neighbors in need.

May God bless Archbishop-elect Weisenburger abundantly in his new role!
